A Kobe Bryant 2011-12 Panini Gold Standard Basketball card was amongst the most watched cards on eBay the week ending August 28, 2012. The seller of the card, canfindit, took home a cool $1,513.00 for the card that ended with 115 watchers. What makes this card so special is that Kobe inscribed the card with "USA". Kobe recently helped team USA win the gold medal in the 2012 Olympic games. Any fan of Kobe would love to have a card like this.
The card comes from the 'Superscribe Autograph' insert cards found in 11-12 Gold Standard Basketball. The Kobe is serial numbered to #/149. Some of them are inscribed and some of them are not. Obviously the ones that feature an inscription like this one will sell for a premium.

2011-12 Panini Gold Standard Basketball
Gold might not be as hot of a commodity as is was last year when this set made it's debut on the sports card scene, but collectors (and speculators alike) are still gobbling up the precious metal in these uncertain economic times.
Speaking of uncertain times ... the basketball card market was certain fragmented and certainly had it's ups/downs during this 2011/12 NBA season. Most of the products came out after the season, and the real only driver of sales has been the rookie redemption cards - which could pay off big once Panini holds the random draft for the autograph versions.
Bring On The Gold Rush!!
Maybe just what the basketball card market needs right now is a little bit of precious metal to make things a little more exciting. Certainly some of the early photos from Panini from Gold Standard has been impressive - however most collectors are not going to be too impressed. Boxes of this have an MSRP of $200 per box ... and with Panini having MAP (minimum advertised pricing) on all it's products, you won't see the price fall on a box of this for a while. Getting involved in group box breaks or just buying single cards of this product is probably the way to go - unless you really feel like gambling.
Some of the cards are really nice, including the Superscribe autograph cards. Given the timing of the release - many of these players are signing contracts with new NBA teams, so the Ryan Anderson autograph cards with Orlando, Jeremy Lin cards with New York and Steve Nash cards with Phoenix all look a little stale even though they just came out!
It also looks like Panini 'cleared some room' in the inventory closet - as you see some players like Shaquille O'Neal more often than in sets in the past. The autograph and jersey card sets look a little watered down to me as well .... with maybe Panini thinking it better save some materials for the much anticipated 2012/13 NBA season.
Like I said earlier, don't buy boxes of this for $200 unless you want to see them sell for much less about 6 weeks from now. Stick to single cards & box breaks and I think you'll have more fun. Sure, there will be boxes with Kobe Bryant and Larry Bird autographs - but the shortened season seemed to cut some of the sizzle off the checklist compared to the prior year. Good luck either way, really ... you can never loose opening sports cards & certainly can spend your money in more wasteful ways!

11/12 Panini Limited Basketball Checklist Revealed!
2011-12 Panini Limited basketball is coming out of this week, and we're
getting a look at the checklist courtesy of sports card radio.
The base that contains 125 cards and each card is serial number out of 299. There are three levels of parallel cards however I didn't see the emerald color that is typically popular in these sets. The hottest cards will be the draft redemption cards, and we know the draft order for the top 20 NBA rookies from the draft last week. My guess is Panini will do another random draft on their blog or another similar way to give away the autographed rookies from 2012.
There are several other sets, some of them look very interesting and there are lots of interesting NBA players. Aside from Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, and other top NBA players you'll find other players like Andre Bargnani, Jeremy Lin, Kurt Rambis Nick Young, DeMarcus Cousins, Serge Ibaka, Ryan Anderson, Mo Williams, and other NBA players. My favorite cards might be the Trophy Case inserts that have award winners, and NBA champions with autographs and jersey material cards.
These boxes will set you back $100 or more, but they have the draft redemption autograph, which could be Kyrie Erving or another top rookie from last season ... so it's worth the gamble in my opinion.

72 Rookie Cards In 2012-13 NBA Hoops Basketball!!!
This year was a strange year for basketball cards. The lockout basically put the can on the new rookie cards, but sometimes good things come to those that wait!
2012-13 might end up being one of the coolest years to collect because Panini is basically combining the two rookie classes into one year. That means there will be 72 rookie cards in the new Panini NBA Hoops basketball set.
I love it!
Last year was pretty boring for NBA collectors, and in fact we're just now seeing the RC redemptions in Past & Present, but almost every set next year should be fun to open. I'm guessing with 72 different rookies, it's going to be hard to get the entire set, so you might see some good values on these cards going forward.

2011-12 Panini Preferred Basketball
It's that time of year (just a bit later than usual) where we start seeing new products from Panini. One I'm keeping my eye on is Preferred basketball. This set won't have any of the new rookies - but that might mean boxes are loaded up with some nice veteran autographs?? The book jersey cards fall 1 per box ... again ... all veterans and 2nd year players.
You can see for yourself, but the checklist looks pretty tight, so all the non-rookie collectors should have fun with this one. It is really too bad a set like this doesn't have the Kemba Walker's and MarShon Brooks cards everyone wants ... but we'll just have to wait for Certified and Gold Standard for that.
Hoops releases before this set, but I like the hits better in this box.

Basketball Is BACK!
With the NBA back in action on Christmas Day ... will Panini have a set out in time for the 1st game?
Your guess is as good as mine, but hopefully we're busting packs in December. If not, I'm sure 2011 will be jam packed with all kinds of NBA cards from Panini. With the players essentially making 'less money' ... is it possible that they sign more cards and/or give up more memorabilia?
Both remain to be seen - but we are excited basketball is back, and can't wait for all the new releases. Plus it will be exciting to see how recent rookies like Tyreke Evans, Blake Griffin, John Wall and many other perform.
Christmas will be extra special this year for NBA fans!

2010-11 Panini Gold Standard Basketball To Set 'Bar'
With recent releases of 10-11 Absolute Basketball and 10-11 Classics Basketball, we have gotten some sets recently that we were familiar with from last season. Absolute has loads of jersey cards and multiple sets and parallels to collect. Plus it was the first ever Panini set to have Kevin Durant Autograph cards! Classics basketball is cool because it features on-card autograph rookie cards - which we haven't really seen since 10-11 Threads, which were on wood ... or 10-11 Timeless Treasures which were on a leather.
But there is something about those 'new' sets that pop up every once and a while. 2010-11 Panini Gold Standard Basketball is one of those sets. Not only will you find real 14K gold cards in each case, you will find Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and all the top RC autographs throughout the set. This is a limited set - as each card is serial #/299 or less! Make sure you save your money for this one, as each 12 card box/pack will set you back $200 or more. Release date is scheduled to be May 25, 2011 - so mark that date down and hope Panini doesn't push it back!!
