2011-12 Panini Preferred Basketball

It's that time of year (just a bit later than usual) where we start seeing new products from Panini. One I'm keeping my eye on is Preferred basketball. This set won't have any of the new rookies - but that might mean boxes are loaded up with some nice veteran autographs?? The book jersey cards fall 1 per box ... again ... all veterans and 2nd year players.

You can see for yourself, but the checklist looks pretty tight, so all the non-rookie collectors should have fun with this one. It is really too bad a set like this doesn't have the Kemba Walker's and MarShon Brooks cards everyone wants ... but we'll just have to wait for Certified and Gold Standard for that.

Hoops releases before this set, but I like the hits better in this box.

With the NBA back in action on Christmas Day ... will Panini have a set out in time for the 1st game?

Your guess is as good as mine, but hopefully we're busting packs in December. If not, I'm sure 2011 will be jam packed with all kinds of NBA cards from Panini. With the players essentially making 'less money' ... is it possible that they sign more cards and/or give up more memorabilia?

Both remain to be seen - but we are excited basketball is back, and can't wait for all the new releases. Plus it will be exciting to see how recent rookies like Tyreke Evans, Blake Griffin, John Wall and many other perform.

Christmas will be extra special this year for NBA fans!

Those of you that were looking forward to 10/11 Gold Standard Basketball, which was initially planned for the end of the month, the release date has been pushed back almost an entire month. Below are the tentative release dates for the remaining 2010/11 sets.

With recent releases of 10-11 Absolute Basketball and 10-11 Classics Basketball, we have gotten some sets recently that we were familiar with from last season. Absolute has loads of jersey cards and multiple sets and parallels to collect. Plus it was the first ever Panini set to have Kevin Durant Autograph cards! Classics basketball is cool because it features on-card autograph rookie cards - which we haven't really seen since 10-11 Threads, which were on wood ... or 10-11 Timeless Treasures which were on a leather.

But there is something about those 'new' sets that pop up every once and a while. 2010-11 Panini Gold Standard Basketball is one of those sets. Not only will you find real 14K gold cards in each case, you will find Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and all the top RC autographs throughout the set. This is a limited set - as each card is serial #/299 or less! Make sure you save your money for this one, as each 12 card box/pack will set you back $200 or more. Release date is scheduled to be May 25, 2011 - so mark that date down and hope Panini doesn't push it back!!

Great Month For Basketball Collectors

The NBA season is in full swing - with Miami, Los Angeles and Boston playing well. The Celtics even got a boost this week when Rajon Rondo came back from an ankle injury.

Speaking of Boost - have you seen Blake Griffin play? He's a cross between Charles Barkley, LeBron James and a little Shawn Kemp. Blake Griffin 2009/10 Rookie Cards have been heating up as he is a top 5 NBA player in terms of production.

Panini will have its basketball lineup in full gear during the month of January, and it has me really excited.

First there is 2010/11 Donruss Basketball. It's not too expensive (around $2.99 per pack) but there are some nice star NBA autographs - including Kobe Bryant, Russell Westbrook, Dennis Rodman, Magic Johnson, Derrick Rose, John Wall, Blake Griffin and more. The auto checklist is actually pretty deep - including my fantasy sleeper of the 2nd half Toney Douglas of the New York Knicks. You should be able to find this just about everywhere on January 5th - or thereabouts.

2010/11 Donruss Basketball Checklist

We can't wait for 2010/11 Panini Adrenalyn XL Basketball cards to come out. It should be around January 18th when collectors can get the series 2 cards and start to dominate online. It appears that you should be able to trade cards this year online - plus some added pieces to the game. Make sure you check back here as we'll give away many codes from this set over the course of the 2010/11 NBA basketball season.

2010/11 Panini Adrenalyn XL Basketball

For the bigger spenders - Timeless Treasures comes out this month too!! This stuff has some real sweet cards in it. You'll find more HOF Basketball players in this set - along with all the rest of the NBA stars & rookies we come to expect from Panini Basketball. I think this set won't go up in price - in fact it may come down a bit, so buying boxes may be risky. However, the single cards, inparticular the RC Autograph Cards are worth buying if you feel the player has a future in the NBA. When the checklist was released early on, George Mikan was the only player known - now we know there are more legends that will be in the set. Nothing excites us more than a new season of NBA basketball. This year you have LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh forming a mini dream team in South Beach. The Lakers have signed Matt Barnes and should have a healthy Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum for another run at the championship. It should be a great season with lots of coverage and attention from the media.

We haven't even touched on this years 10/11 Rookie Cards!! John Wall and many others will make their 1st appearance on NBA cardboard. Panini Prestige will have them all covered, including 1 RC autograph per box.

10/11 Prestige Basketball will have 24 Packs per box - there are 2 Autograph Cards + 2 Memorabilia cards, all for around $4.00 per pack. Expect to find Prestige in stores around September 29.

With the 2010/11 NBA Draft Picks already selected - collectors still have have time to collect some 09/10 Basketball sets that will be coming out during the summer months. No word from Panini on any 10/11 Releases as of yet - however we expect some information shortly.

09/10 Panini Court Kings Basketball is set to release June 30, 2010. There are 11 Cards Per Pack/Box that will run you somewhere south of $100. This delivers 4 Memorabilia or Autographs along with 7 other inserts/base cards. What is cool about this set is that every base card is serial #/325 - which makes them somewhat more collectible that your average base card. There are many other cool autographs and memorabilia cards - along with Tyreke Evans Rookie Cards.

09/10 Panini Crown Royale Basketball is a great re-mix of the popular Football and Baseball Pacific branded products of the past. Collectors will be familiar with the die-cut crown - which will feature some good looking on-card autograph rookie cards. This product is set to release on July 14, 2010. It has an interesting configuration - 4 Packs - 7 Cards Per Pack. Each Pack contains an autograph or memorabilia card. This retails at around $100 per box - making it a fairly good deal for this type of product + you get 4 hits. It will be interesting to see what set collectors like more - this set or Panini Court Kings above...

09/10 Panini National Treasures Basketball - the mother of all 2009/10 Basketball sets! Or at least the most expensive at around $400 per pack! Luckily for that money you get 8 cards per pack - 2 Base Cards/RC/Legend + 6 Autographs or Memorabilia Cards. The Rookie Autographs look great and probably will be some of the most expensive and sought after Panini Basketball rookie cards of the season. You should find plenty of huge hits in a product like this - and even if you can't afford the $400 price tag (like myself :) you will want to check for single cards - as these will be cool to add to your collection. Release Date: August 4, 2010.

09/10 Panini Hall Of Fame Basketball is a HOF only product - meaning rookie card collectors should avoid this products - and old timers like myself will jump for joy! This product has some awesome cards including actual game used 1992 USA Olympic Dream Team game used jersey cards!! You will find autographs of many NBA hall of famers including Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and more. This set contains 1 Pack Per Box - 11 Cards Per Pack - Each Box Contains 2 Autographs & 1 Memorabilia Card. The hobby box/pack SRP is $100 and you should find this at your local hobby shop around August 18, 2010.

The moment we all have been waiting for! Panini has teased us with semi-high end products like recently released 09/10 Timeless Treasures and 09/10 Absolute Memorabilia. Collectors even have 09/10 Court Kings and 09/10 Crown Royale to look forward to as well.

But can any of those sets even match the excitement of opening a $400 box of basketball cards??? Probably not!! For your hard earned money, you will get 6 autographs or memorabilia cards per box. The rookie cards stand out as possibly as some of the best looking we've seen in a long time (any sport - see Tyreke Evans below)

The National Treasures Basketball Checklist is massive and has a great mix of combo, trio and quad autographs. You will also find Logoman and multi-color swatch memorabilia pieces. We expect this to be a winner - at least on the secondary single card market as collectors will finally have the super high-end basketball set they've wanted all year. You just have to wait until August 4, 2010 to get your hands on a box!

As the NBA Playoffs continue to heat up, Panini America, the leading global publisher of sports and entertainment collectibles launched today the “Play Kobe One-On-One” Promotion with four-time NBA Champion Kobe Bryant. Basketball fans beginning May 1 through June 17, 2010 will be able to log-on to www.PaniniAdrenalyn.com to compete against other fans, the leading scorer at the end of the promotion will get a chance to meet Kobe Bryant and play him “One-On-One” in a game of Adrenalyn, the new interactive trading card game from Panini.

New Panini Basketball Set Announced: 09/10 Panini Platinum Basketball

Panini America announced today a new 2009/10 Basketball Set due out to collectors on July 7, 2010. This set might be one of your final chances to get 09-10 NBA Rookies like Tyreke Evans and Stephen Curry.

Each box will contain 18 Packs with 5 Cards Per Pack. Each pack carries a $5.99 SRP and it should be exciting to see the Prizm Parallel Signatures of NBA stars and Rookies.

One suggestion to Panini - as this set is months away - Add redemptions for 2010/11 Rookies (a la Topps Finest did) as when July comes around, basketball collectors will be talking about the new crop set to come in 2010/11.

Panini and L.A. Lakers Team Up

Panini America and the World Champion Los Angeles Lakers have announced a multi-year partnership that will begin on Sunday with the distribution of 20,000 packs of Adrenalyn at the Lakers home game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

“We are excited to announce our multi-year relationship with the World Champion Los Angeles Lakers and look forward to introducing our Adrenalyn Trading Card Game to Lakers fans. Working so closely with Kobe, this was a natural fit and we look forward to a great partnership going forward.” said Scott Prusha, Marketing Manager for Panini America.

Blake Griffin Panini Cards Still Sell Well

It was unfortunate for NBA fans that the #1 overall pick in the draft, Blake Griffin, got hurt early on in the pre-season and never saw any regular season action with the L.A. Clippers. Blake will look to heal up his injured knee and get back on the court next season. Despite the injury, collectors are still paying big bucks for Blake Griffin Panini Rookie Cards.

Sports Card Report recently found a 2009/10 Blake Griffin Panini Certified 1/1 Freshman Fabric Prime Parallel that sold on eBay for $660.00. Here is an excerpt from their write up on the card.

"The seller did an awful job at promoting this Panini Certified Blake Griffin 1/1 which might have hurt the final price. The title of the auction was "Blake Griffin Jersey Auto #1/1" not putting the words Panini, Certified, Rookie and/or RC, and 09/10 in his title could have cost him a few bucks. Despite the high price tag, this card was not one of the most watched Panini cards, and many people probably missed this one unless they were specifically searching for Blake Griffin."

Even with the seller not describing the card very well, $660.00 is a big price to pay for a player who has not played in the NBA as of yet. Griffin does have loads of talent, and we look forward to seeing how his career, and card prices progress over the next year.

2009/10 Panini Crown Royal Basketball Preview

Panini has made a great move in reviving the 'old' Pacific line of trading cards called Crown Royale. The set was known for its intricate die-cut cards throughout the entire set. Baseball, Football and even Hockey have had memorable Crown Royale sets and now Panini is bringing that technology to Basketball.

The basketball version will be priced around $25.00 per pack or about $100 for a 4 pack Hobby Box. Each pack will contain a Jersey/Memorabilia Card or an Autograph Card. The chase cards will be the on-card Rookie Autographs that are serial #/499 and the Kobe Bryant On-Card autographs will be popular with collectors.

It would have been nice for Panini to used more of the Die-Cut inserts of the past, however it appears that only the base set uses this technology. The inserts and subsets look more like traditional cards ... although the Majectic Autograph Set, Nothing But Net Insert, and the LeBron James King of His Court are very nicely designed cards ... they don't really fit with the Crown Royale theme.
